In 1945, four individuals who had worked on the Manhattan project-John L. Balderston, Jr., Dieter M. Gruen, W.J. McLean, and David B. Wehmeyer-formed a committee and wrote a letter to 154 public figures asking for their opinions about the possibility of the creation of a world government. UNA-USA was founded for the purposes of distributing information about the United Nations and encouraging Americans to support the work of the United Nations. The Iowa City chapter maintained an office which sold UN publications and UNICEF cards and raised money to sponsor bus trips to Washington, DC and New York for local high school students.
